This week, the Los Angeles City Council is considering a resolution to adopt a deeply problematic and dangerous definition of antisemitism, known as the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition. This definition conflates criticism of Israel with antisemitism, thereby undermining free expression in support of Palestinian human rights.
This IHRA definition of antisemitism is heavily centered around Israel and lists examples of antisemitism such as “Claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor,” and “applying double standards” to Israel. In fact, the lead author of this definition of antisemitism, Ken Stern, admitted that this loose and broad definition is only intended for foreign data collection, and he himself warned that adopting it domestically to police language on college campuses would pose a serious threat to free expression and open debate on Palestine and Israel. The ACLU has also spoken up against the adoption of IHRA, noting it threatened free expression on college campuses.
So, in defense of free expression, and of the rights of Palestinian rights advocates to speak truthfully about Israel’s crimes against Palestinians, we need you to urge the LA City Council to reject this resolution.
ACT NOW! Use our action tool below to email the LA City Council and urge them to oppose the Paul Koretz and Bob Blumenfield resolution seeking to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism.
